In March 1935 twelve women from Scituate, Rhode Island discussed and subsequently organized a garden club. They found Fringed
Gentians growing by a stream near Route 116. Their excitement over finding such a rare wildflower led to naming the club after the beautiful Gentian.
The organization's objectives are: • To develop a working knowledge of
all phases of gardening; • To preserve and protect the environment; • To encourage civic planting;
• To develop the art of flower arranging.
